Nature is magical and full of contradictions.
On the one hand, there is the wilderness with plenty of high peaks, the untouched valleys and large lake systems. In this landscape you can travel for days without seeing another soul. The Funäsdalen mountains in Härjedalen constitute the southernmost bare mountain area in Sweden, with the highest and most scenic peaks south of the Arctic circle. The highest is Helags at 1,796 metres, with a glacier in the giant bowl on the northern slopes.
On the other hand, large and alluring areas of the mountains are easy to access. The hiking trails are suitable for beginners as well as experienced trekkers. The easiest access to Flatruet (a plateau with Sweden´s highest located road) is by car, an alternative way to access bare mountain terrain is to use a ski lift. There are lodges, hotels and restaurants within walking distance.
The mountains are either intensely green, such as Mittåkläppen and Hamrafjället (which are two of our foremost wild flower mountains) or fascinatingly barren.
In addition to the scenery the mountains offer many delicacies, such as cloudberries, chanterelles, morels and game fish. During your stay in the mountains you can recharge your batteries, fill your soul with experiences while stocking your larder with culinary souvenirs which will last all through winter.
The fauna is quite exotic, and with some luck you may spot a musk-ox, bears, wolves, wolverine, eagles and lynx.
"30 Treasure hikes in Funäsdalen” are our hiking favorites, the best all- or half-day hikes.
We have chosen our own personal favourites 30 Treasure hikes, where the orchids are the most beautiful, the waterfalls as most mysterious and the view as most breathtaking. We want to make it easy for our guests to enjoy big experiences- in a modern way.

ADVENTURES

In Funäsdalen you are always close to some kind of adventure. Everything is fascinating: nature, the people and the natural environment. Children love the mountains where every new day brings a new challenge; horseback riding one day, followed by fishing and cooking the catch outdoors. The climbers path in Funäsdalen is a completely safe way for the family to try rock climbing, with or without a guide.

There are many waters for canoeing. On the river Ljusnan you can enjoy easy, downstream paddling in lush surroundings. The lakes of Rogen are unique and barren alternative, attracting canoeists from all over Europe. For a bit more excitement you can ride the rapids. With a rented canoe you can either go your own way or join a guided group. For children and young at heart adults there is the adventure path.

An unforgettable experience, on a hot summer´s day, is to bathe and swim below the waterfalls at Tvärån. Also, the magnificent nature in the mountains, seen from the back of a horse or a mountain bike, gives you memories that last for a lifetime.

Just being in this kind of natural environment is beneficial to the soul, your mind clears and the joy of living returns. All those "musts" disappear and lose importance. Of course you can access fax machines and the Internet here, but only if and when you choose to.

FISHING

In Funäsdalen there are more fishing waters than fishermen. There are lakes, tarns, rivers and brooks with char, trout, grayling and whitefish. There are fishing grounds to suit all kinds of fishermen, from easily accessed waters for the beginners or families to extreme, high altitude waters for the expert. Whether you are fly fishing or angling, your chances of a catch of game fish are excellent. There are courses and guides available for those who want to learn more.

Further information and suggestions are available in our special fishing guide, available at the Tourist Information Centre.

The peaceful surroundings, the excitement waiting for a catch, the inspiring conversation during a coffee break by the camp fire are all part of the experience of fishing in the mountains.

GOLF

Funäsdalen is the home of two of Sweden´s most spectacular and scenic golf courses. An interesting layout, awe-inspiring mountains in the background, plenty of water and well-kept greens and fairways make playing here something special.
The 18-hole course in Ljusnedal, built in 1972, has twice hosted the Swedish Pro Tour, proving the quality of the course.
The 9-hole course in Ramundberget runs along river Ljusnan and rewards precision rather than distance.
Following a visit, the golf magazine Svensk Golf described the course:
"It´s sheer and utter golf euphoria. This is as good as it gets. Every player should, at least once in his life, be allowed to experience the last six holes."

There are good value golf packages with accommodation and green fee available through the Tourist Information Centre, tel. 0684-15580.

CULTURE

There are still two Sami communities living in Funäsdalen. There are also several mountain pastures. These, together with other signs of cultivation, give the area its genuine and distinctive feature.

Several of the culture paths are marked and the sights are sign-posted, enabling you to explore our cultural heritage on your own. A visit to the rock-paintings, some 4,000 to 6,000 years old, can fire your imagination; how did these nomad people live? Why did they come to this beautiful but climatically harsh region? The local museum, Härjedalens Fjällmuseum, gives the answers to these questions as well as showing the lives of the Sami and mountain farmers in the old days. The museum opened recently and offers many opportunities to discover, touch and explore. The combination of the museum, Fornminnesparken and Näsvalls art museum is proven to be a genuine success. The many visitors are impressed and inspired by the local folklore of Härjedalen. You are welcome to a virtual tour of the museum.
Röros, on the Norwegian side of the border, is a town protected by the UN as a cultural heritage. The untouched dwellings and mines make the town well worth visiting.
In 1882 the first mountain guest house opened in Sweden when Fjellnäs started accommodating the so-called "air guests". In those days, just like today, visitors came to enjoy the beautiful nature, culture and those people striving to continue the old traditions.
Nature in Funäsdalen has always attracted artists. Visitors are welcome at the art museum as well as several galleries/ studios.
In 1645, Härjedalen finally became Swedish. ?The Big Swede? had for several years of war been trying the locals under the motto "rather wasteland than enemy land". The Norwegian influence is obvious in the dialect and there are still strong bonds with Norway.
